The process of kiln drying removes moisture and guarantee’s maximum heat output. This takes roughly 5–10 days with temperatures reaching up to 70°C in a commercial sized kiln – this creates renewable energy/ biomass using saw dust.
Every batch of logs is tested to check moisture levels are between 10-15%. Then, they are stored in a dry barn until dispatch.
Kiln - dried log’s will produce more heat, burn for longer and provide a fire with minimal smoke or spitting.
The ‘old’ way of drying logs.
To be well seasoned, this big task takes up to 3 years.
The wood is cut to size then, barn stored with plenty of air circulation to help the logs dry evenly throughout.
Oak is very dense and requires roughly 2 years to season as it holds a high moisture content. Where as, Ash could dry as quickly as anything between 6 to 18 months.
Although, this is an easy process it also requires lots of space and the results are not as effective. The moisture content only reaches between 20–25%. A high moisture content reduces efficient combustion and heat output. Seasoned logs are more likely to smoke and spit.
